Chapter 8

She kept sneaking little looks at him as if discovering a chink in the armor or something that indicated he’d not been honest. The truth he’d told her, from his heart, was the most beautiful thing she’d ever heard. The warning he gave her only made her love him more. He made no excuses for being a possessive, fierce lover, the best friend anyone could ever want, and someone she could always count on.

The question in her own mind was whether she had what it took to keep up with him? He’d walk away if she asked him to. He’d stay and shower her world with love. But she had to take that step and do what he’d asked. She had to do it consciously and not by accident or pure chance.

All that remained behind them. From today onward it would be fully intentional. This bond between them was real, after all—love of the highest order. The crazy thing was that she barely knew him. And it didn’t matter.

He caught her in one of those looks. “Is there something wrong?”

“No. I’m just wondering what lucky star I was born under.”

“My star. You were born under my star. So I could take care of you. It was all predestined. You had no choice in the matter!” He smiled, softening what was a strong comment that made her heart race.

She missed him already as T.J. and Tyler appeared at her door.

“Here you go, lover boy, since I doubt Abbey has anything that would come close to fitting you.” T.J. shoved a fresh pair of red, white, and blue boxers at Peter’s face. “Go change, but make it quick.”

“Now you’ve given me an idea,” said Abbey. “I’d actually like to see what something lacy would look like on him.”

Tyler piped up. “Don’t try it Abbey. He’d be so pissed.”

“I’d be pissed at what?” asked Peter as he returned from the bathroom.

“Here, I’ll make sure you have these fresh and cleaned when you get home tonight, Peter.”

“That’s a serious sign. Already doing laundry for you, sport.” T.J. winked at her. She liked the big medic and was glad Peter had such handsome and upstanding men to serve with. They looked her in the eyes without flinching or diverting their gaze. They answered questions directly, even when they were joking with her. They seemed to accept life on life’s terms. They didn’t preach and didn’t seem to judge the fact that Abbey and Peter had formed such a quick, intense bond.

That’s probably the way they all do it.

Peter took her in his arms. “You remember what you promised. Don’t delay. Get your butt down to the station, and then make sure everyone at both workplaces has the card of the officer you talk to, okay? You make it easy on them, just in case.”

“I will. Thank you, Peter.”

They kissed and he gave her a light spank on her rear. She waved at T.J. and Tyler and heard T.J. grumble on the way down the
